Attempted Homicide of Staff Member at California State Prison, Los Angeles County Under Investigation

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an attack on a correctional counselor at California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) as an attempted homicide.

On Sept. 10, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m., incarcerated person Marcus Curry allegedly attacked a correctional counselor as he was leaving the counselor’s office. Staff immediately came to the aid of the employee and apprehended Curry without further incident. An improvised weapon was discovered at the scene.

The injured employee was transferred to an outside medical facility for treatment and has been released.

Curry has been placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by the LAC Investigative Services Unit. The case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for attempted homicide charges.

Curry, 50, was received from Los Angeles County on March 28, 2000. He was sentenced to life with parole for possession of a firearm as a felon, a third-strike offense, and 20 years concurrent for assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer as a second striker with enhancements for use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury. Additionally, he was sentenced by San Diego County on Feb. 13, 2002, to life with parole for second-degree murder as a third striker, with an enhancement for intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.

Peer support and other support services are being offered to employees.

LAC opened in 1993 and houses approximately 3,250 minimum-, medium-, maximum- and high-security custody inmates. LAC offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs approximately 1,700 people.
