Braun’s Law is now law.
Governor Newsom signed a DUI reform bill co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, SB 907, to strengthen laws against repeat DUI offenders.
The law includes Braun’s Law in honor of Braun Levi, an 18-year-old Loyola High School student who was killed by a suspected repeat drunk driver in Manhattan Beach last year.
Braun’s Law ensures that individuals whose DUI charges are pled down to a lesser or different charge are advised with a Watson warning of the serious consequences of driving while impaired, which include being charged with second degree murder if they drive while intoxicated and kill someone.
SB 907 also allows increased sentencing for committing a hit and run causing death or injury if the driver has a prior conviction for DUI, DUI causing bodily injury, wet reckless, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, or gross vehicular manslaughter, within the past 10 years.
