DEPUTIES SHOOT DOG TO SAVE MAN DURING VICIOUS ATTACK IN LANCASTER

LANCASTER, Calif. — Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a pit bull Monday morning after it was actively attacking a man at a home in Lancaster.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:53 a.m. in the 43200 block of 20th Street West.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies arrived to find an adult man lying unresponsive in the front yard while a pit bull was actively attacking him. The victim was trapped inside a fenced yard with a locked gate, preventing deputies from immediately reaching him.

Deputies attempted to stop the attack by giving verbal commands to the dog, but the animal continued mauling the victim. A deputy then fired at the dog, striking only the attacking animal and immediately ending the attack.

Deputies quickly entered the yard and began providing emergency medical care until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities said the pit bull belonged to a family member who lived at the residence. No one else was injured.

The circumstances leading up to the attack remain under investigation.

Lancaster Station Captain Paul Bartlett praised the deputies' actions, stating they encountered a life-threatening emergency, acted without hesitation to save the victim's life, and immediately transitioned to providing lifesaving care once the threat was stopped.
