Fatal Traffic Crash on State Route 2

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 4, 2026

On September 4, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a rollover fatal traffic collision occurred on State Route 2 along the eastern edge of the Angeles National Forest, between Big Pines and Wrightwood, near Mile Post Marker 81.30.

Preliminary investigation indicates a black 2016 Hyundai Veloster, occupied by six residents of Wrightwood, California, was traveling eastbound on State Route 2 when the driver allowed the vehicle to veer to the right, depart the roadway, overturn, travel down the embankment, and collide with a power pole.

Five of the six occupants were ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision. Of those ejected, four sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The remaining two occupants were transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where they were admitted in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that none of the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, and that alcohol is likely a contributing factor in this crash.

The identities of the parties involved are being withheld at this time. For additional information regarding the deceased, please contact the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

This crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigating Officer F. Melgar at the CHP Antelope Valley Area office at (661) 743-6060 during business hours. After business hours, please contact the Los Angeles Communications Center at (323) 259-3200.

The CHP reminds all motorists and passengers that seat belts save lives. Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective action a person can take to protect themselves in the event of a traffic collision. Proper restraint use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death. California law requires all vehicle occupants to be properly buckled – always buckle up, every trip, every time.

The CHP also urges motorists never to operate a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any combination thereof. Impaired driving is illegal, dangerous, and entirely preventable. If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or contact a friend or family member. If you observe a suspected impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately.
