THE SCHOOL IS EL DORADO ELEMENTARY
On Monday, January 12, an incident occurred involving my daughter and another student at her school. My daughter was asked by this student to play, and when she declined, the student spit on her. When I asked my daughter to clarify where the spit landed, she indicated her lower lip and chin area. She stated that an adult witnessed the incident and that the child was reprimanded to some extent.
Later that same day, during second recess, the same student pushed my daughter, causing her to nearly lose her balance and fall. She became upset and was assisted by another adult, to whom she explained what had occurred. I was not informed of either incident by the school and only learned of them after picking my daughter up that afternoon. I went to the school immediately; however, no administrator was available to speak with me.
The following morning, Tuesday, January 13, prior to drop-off, I spoke with a lead administrator who appeared appropriately concerned and indicated that disciplinary action had been taken, implying the student would not be on campus. This provided some reassurance at the time. However, during pickup that afternoon, my daughter informed me that the student was present at school and had pushed one of her friends during recess. I returned to the office that day to address this escalating pattern of behavior. I was again assured the situation was being handled and that the student was being closely monitored.
On Wednesday, January 14, the student was absent, and my daughter had a positive, incident-free day at school.
Unfortunately, on Thursday, January 15, the student returned. During recess, he chased my daughter while attempting to spit on her repeatedly. My daughter reported that no aide was immediately supervising him and that another student had to alert an aide for assistance. Despite my prior request to be notified of any further incidents, I once again received no communication from the school.
I spoke with the principal following this incident and expressed my concern that my daughter should not fear participating in recess or worry about being spit on while at school. I was told the situation was being handled. I was also informed that the student had been wearing a face mask to prevent spitting; however, my daughter has stated she has never observed this student wearing a mask. Additionally, my daughter was told she needed to be “mindful” of where the student was so she could avoid him. I find this unacceptable. My daughter is a well-behaved student with no disciplinary history, and she should not be placed in a position where she is responsible for avoiding another student due to ongoing unsafe behavior.
While I understand this child is young, spitting on another student constitutes assault and presents both a safety and health concern. I do not feel that adequate measures are currently being taken to protect my daughter or other students. I have spoken with the Sheriff’s Department regarding this matter and will be reporting the incidents to the Lancaster Police Department to ensure proper documentation.
This situation is serious and requires immediate and effective intervention. My priority is my daughter’s safety. If the school is unable to take appropriate steps to ensure that she is protected, I will continue to pursue this matter through law enforcement and any other necessary channels.
