Today, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office updated the Kern River fatality sign from 342 to 348 lives lost since 1968.
Following the sign update, community partners gathered at Hart Park for a Water Safety Resource Fair and life jacket giveaway to help educate the public ahead of the summer season. While life jackets can help save lives, the safest choice is to stay out of the river altogether.
Fast currents, cold water, hidden hazards, and changing conditions make the Kern River unpredictable, even for experienced swimmers.
Our message remains the same: Stay Out & Stay Alive.
Thank you to the Kern River Conservancy, Kern County Fire Department, Search & Rescue, Public Health Water Watchers, and all community partners committed to keeping our community safe this summer.
